Good plumbers are rarely short of work — but a lot of it is whatever comes through the door, at whatever margin. Getting more of the profitable jobs, and being the one people call in a panic, comes down to being easy to find and easy to trust the moment someone needs you. Here’s how that works online, in plain English.
Win the emergency, because that’s where the money is
When a pipe bursts or a boiler dies, nobody rings round for three quotes — they call the first plumber who shows up and looks safe, and they don’t haggle. That makes emergency searches some of the most valuable work you can win. Two things get you there: being visible for “emergency plumber near me” type searches in your area, and being reachable in one tap when someone finds you. If you can’t always answer, even a simple setup that lets someone leave a request that pings straight to you stops you losing those calls to the next name down.
Get your Google listing sorted
That map of three plumbers at the top of a local search is powered by your free Google Business Profile, and it’s the biggest lever you’ve got — because hardly anyone scrolls past those three. Fill it in like you mean it: the right category, the areas you actually cover, photos of your work and your van, and a steady drip of reviews behind it. For most plumbers this is the fastest route to more calls going, so it’s the first job on the list — before the website, before anything.
Make reviews a habit
Picture two plumbers next to each other in that map — one with a handful of reviews, one with a hundred, all recent. It’s no contest. Reviews do two jobs at once: they lift you up the local rankings, and they’re the reassurance that wins the call once you’re showing. That makes them about the best-value thing you can do, and they’re free. The whole knack is remembering to ask, every time — job finished, customer happy, get the review out of them on the spot. Keep that up over a few months and you’ve built a stream of work no competitor can outspend.
Chase the planned work, not just call-outs
Emergencies pay well but they’re unpredictable. The steadier money is in the planned jobs — bathrooms, boiler installs, full re-pipes — and those customers behave differently. They research for a week or two and buy off proof, so getting found for “bathroom fitter [town]” and “boiler installation near me”, and showing real photos of your finished work, is how you fill the diary with jobs worth having. A wall of your actual bathrooms sells far harder than any words.
Show you’re Gas Safe and legit
Whether it’s a panic or a plan, letting a stranger touch your pipes and boiler is a trust decision. Your Gas Safe registration, real reviews and a genuine local presence are what make someone choose you over the cheaper name with no badges. Make sure those signals are obvious wherever a customer looks — on your Google profile and on your website. (That website’s the part I build — here’s how.)
The order I’d do it in
Don’t try to swallow it whole — go in sequence. First the Google listing, because that’s where the emergency calls come from and it moves the fastest. Then get into the habit of asking for a review on every job, because they stack up quietly for years. Next, a quick, phone-first website that shows your Gas Safe badge and real photos of your work, so the planned jobs have something to buy into. And last, the longer game — building your rankings for the emergency searches and the higher-value bathroom and boiler ones over the following months.
Sort the first three and you’ll usually notice more calls within weeks, because they’re mostly about capturing work that’s already looking for you. The ranking work is the slow burn that widens the whole stream over time.
None of it’s complicated, but it wants doing properly and keeping up while you’re flat out on jobs. If you’d sooner be on the tools than fighting with Google, that’s what I do for plumbers — see how I get you found, or just tell me your patch and I’ll point you at the quick wins.
