The person landing on your website is doing one of two things — sorting out an overdue eye test, or thinking about new glasses, and often both. Your site has to serve both without making either feel like hard work. That’s a slightly unusual brief, because it’s part clinic and part shop. Most optician websites manage one and forget the other: all clinical and no frames, or a wall of product with no obvious way to book. I build the site to do both jobs properly.
Make booking an eye test effortless
The eye test fills your diary and starts nearly every glasses sale, so booking one should be the easiest thing on the site. Your phone number one tap away on every screen. A short, low-pressure enquiry for the people who’d rather not call. And if you offer online booking, it goes front and centre — because plenty of people want to grab a Saturday slot at ten at night without speaking to a soul. Every extra hurdle between “I really should get my eyes checked” and a booked appointment is another person who puts it off for another month.
Show off the frames — it’s a shop, not just a clinic
This is where most optician sites fall flat. You stock frames people won’t see in every chain window, and that’s a real reason to choose you, so show them. A clean look at your brands and collections, the designer names you carry, the lens options, the sunglasses, the children’s ranges. Real photos of your displays beat any stock image and say “proper shop worth a visit” far better than words can. The aim isn’t to sell online; it’s to get someone to see a frame they love and decide to come in and try it on.
Sell the thing the chains can’t
Someone choosing an independent over a big chain is choosing a different experience, and your website is where you make that difference plain. More time per appointment, the same optometrist who knows their history, unhurried help choosing frames, the specialist stuff — children’s eye tests, dry eye, myopia management, complex prescriptions. A real photo of you and the team, described in plain words, does more to win a wary shopper than any amount of polish. People buy from people, and on your site the people are the whole point.
Look modern, load fast, work on a phone
Most of your visitors are on their phone, half of them on the sofa deciding whether it’s worth bothering. A slow, dated, fiddly website quietly tells them the practice is dated too — not the impression you want anywhere near the word “eyes”. Clean, quick, calm and effortless on a small screen: that’s what turns a curious visitor into someone walking through your door.
Built by me, kept simple
You deal with me start to finish — no account managers, no juniors, no jargon. I plan it, build it and look after it, and the site and domain are yours to keep with no lock-in. If you’d also like to be found by more people searching in the first place, that’s where the SEO side comes in — but a site that converts the visitors you already get is the sensible place to start.
If you want a website that books more eye tests and gets more people trying on frames, let’s have a chat about your practice.
